We had a relaxing day at home today, which included watching Frozen and tobogganing at the hill across the road then spending the evening with dear friends.
This is a typical pose for my daughter, I feel like I’m constantly telling her to put her top down (in jest)! She is so serious in public, I wish people could know the one we call ‘The Blur’.
When my son was born, we gave him a Gund puppy dog to snuggle with. We fast realized we needed to get another one in order to keep up with washing demands! His dogs are called ‘Buppy’ and ‘Guppy’. He is 7-years-old now, and they still make an appearance each night at bedtime.
When my daughter arrived 2 years later, it was my son who insisted that she have her own puppies. She got 2 pink puppies, named ‘Stinky’ and ‘Pinky’ (interchangeable based on varied levels of dirtiness).
Almost 5 years on and she is still attached to those dogs. Every morning they come downstairs and have breakfast with her, then wait patiently on her bed for her to return from school.
It has always been about Pinky.
Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day as it’s known in Australia was, in my mind, rivalled only by my Birthday and Christmas Day when I was growing up.
It’s not like I didn’t have pancakes any other time of the year, so I’m not entirely sure why I loved it so much, but one thing is for sure, I still LOVE this day!!!
I make my pancakes from scratch following a recipe from one of my favourite Australian Chefs – Stephanie Alexander. They are dense, slightly chewy and particularly good with lemon and sugar or maple syrup. I would encourage you all to try them.
Recipe (I could easily have doubled this):
250 grams plain flour.
60 grams butter.
1 1/2 cups of milk.
Pinch of salt.
3 eggs.
Melt the butter with the milk until just warm, then mix all ingredients together until smooth. Refrigerate for minimum of 2 hours. Cook and enjoy!
Today, as part of the ‘Family Day’ provincial holiday, we were invited to a soup and skate hosted by some friends who have built a rink in their backyard.
After filling our tummies with delicious homemade soup, the kids took to the ice and had so much fun skating, pushing each other around on chairs and playing hockey.
While still cold here in Ottawa at -17 celsius, the air was still and the sky a perfect blue. We all had a great day with friends and family.
